Deviance in Sports Practice Test

Ethical codes for coaches shape behavior by setting clear expectations and the consequences for conduct. When rules are explicit and backed by education, oversight, and consistent enforcement, they create a deterrent effect: coaches recognize boundaries, understand what counts as misconduct, and know that violations will be addressed. This helps prevent abuse or coercive practices and supports a culture of accountability and safeguarding for athletes. If enforcement is weak or the rules are vague, however, opportunities for coercion or abuse can emerge, because coaches may rationalize problematic behavior or exploit ambiguities without real consequences. Coaches are in positions of authority, so codes matter not only to limit misconduct but also to guide appropriate leadership and protect athletes; but they work best when paired with training, monitoring, and reliable reporting.
